Philadelphia's Role in History
If ever one city in the world could possibly lay claim to being the very cornerstone of individual and religious liberty it is Philadelphia, located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States of America.
Little did the Dutch settlers traveling down the Delaware River in the 1600's know, and following them William Penn, that when the area was created it would become known throughout the world as "The Cradle of Liberty"-the location where the most accomplished free thinkers and independence fighters would gather to chart the way for humanity to finally have a chance.
Although William Penn was granted the land, to be known as Pennsylvania, from King Charles II in 1681, so strong were Penn's ethics, along with a strong desire to maintain absolute peace in the area, that he ultimately paid the Lenape Indians for their land. As Penn, a devout Quaker, and many others had experienced great religious persecution, he desired that the city to be developed along the Delaware River be one where people would be able to worship their religion in total and complete freedom. His ideal was for the city to be a place that was free from war.
